Ann Kirkpatrick - A Shameful Campaign to Hide a Shameful Record AZ01

http://chumly.com/n/17edeba

ICYMI Cook Report"Kirkpatrick's ruffled relations with tribes”

The Cook Political Report covered CD 1 in their write-up yesterday of the most competitive House races in the country.

Cook points to"Kirkpatrick's ruffled relations with tribes,” noting that the"Navajo Nation tribal council just declined to endorse her.” According to the piece, Kirkpatrick’s missteps have left Jonathan Paton with a"big opening.”

AZ-01: NEW SEAT – Northeast: Flagstaff, Navajo Nation, Casa Grande
Toss Up. Democrats were bullish earlier in the year on former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick's comeback chances in this favorably redrawn Northern Arizona seat, but both parties admit the outcome here is now in doubt. Kirkpatrick's ruffled relations with tribes (the Navajo Nation tribal council just declined to endorse her) and a poor editorial board meeting (the Arizona Republic called it a meltdown) have given GOP state Sen. Jonathan Paton a big opening. Over half of voters in Arizona vote by mail, so there's not much left either side can do.

Arizona Daily Wildcat Endorses Jonathan Paton in AZ01.

Today, the Arizona Daily Wildcat student newspaper threw its support behind Jonathan Paton for Arizona's First District, citing Paton's work on CPS reform and efforts to increase government transparency. The editorial also noted Kirkpatrick's ineffectiveness during her previous term in Congress despite Democrats controlling the House, Senate, and Presidency.

The Wildcat is the daily student newspaper of the University of Arizona, the alma mater of both Paton and Kirkpatrick. Paton was the only Republican that the paper endorsed.

Arizona Daily Wildcat: Paton for Congressional District 1

His opponent, Ann Kirkpatrick, has greater recognition and has already served a term from 2008 to 2010. But during that time, Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate, and still proved to be ineffective at offering long-term solutions to control spending.

In 2009, Paton helped push"Kaity’s Law,” an effort that increased protection for domestic violence victims in dating relationships. In 2010, he led a series of hearings into Arizona’s Child Protective Services after the deaths of three children from Tucson, whose parents had been investigated by CPS. Paton offered his voice to victims whose own voices are too often minimized, and he supports greater transparency in government.

The Arizona Newspapers Association has twice given a Freedom of Information Award to Paton, an advocate of open government records.

Though we don’t agree with all of Paton’s political positions, he has proven himself to be a staunch supporter of government transparency. The Daily Wildcat endorses Paton for Congressional District 1.

Ann Kirkpatrick A boycotter’s best friend AZ01 JustLikePelosi

Ann Kirkpatrick is standing in solidarity with the same out-of-state radical activists who boycotted Arizona, destroying jobs and hurting our economy.

Kirkpatrick has received $5,000 from the SEIU, the union group that helped initiate and lead the boycott of Arizona in 2010. Not a surprise given that Kirkpatrick opposed Arizona’s immigration law, SB1070, and repeatedly voted against efforts to secure our border when she was in the state Legislature.

Kirkpatrick’s money from big unions doesn’t stop there. In total, Kirkpatrick has received a total of $116,700 from powerful union special interests.
"Ann Kirkpatrick is walking arm in arm with the same radical activists who attacked Arizona and hurt our economy,” said Paton spokesman Barrett Marson."This relationship is a red flag. Kirkpatrick will continue to put these extremists before Arizonans if she gets back to Washington.”

ICYMI National Journal lists Ann Kirkpatrick "meltdown" among top memorable House debate moments AZ01.

The National Journal, one of the top political publications in the country, today released its list of "Memorable House Debate Moments of 2012." Out of 435 races nationwide, who made the list? Ann Kirkpatrick, with her "meltdown" at the Arizona Republic editorial board meeting.

Here is what National Journal had to say about Kirkpatrick's meltdown:

-- "Meltdown": Former Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, running to reclaim Arizona's 1st District, won the Arizona Republic's endorsement in 2008 and 2010. But she lost the paper's 2012 endorsement to Republican Jonathan Paton after displaying "unbounded contempt" for Paton during their meeting with the paper's editorial board. "We have seen more complete meltdowns in our board meetings," the Republic editorialized, "but never one so unexpected."

ICYMI Fox 10 "Aced Again" - Ann Kirkpatrick A No-Show for AZ01

Jonathan Paton appeared on Fox 10's Newsmaker Sunday program with respected newsman John Hook yesterday to talk about the race for Arizona's First District and the issues that are important to the voters, such as job creation. Hook is widely respected in Arizona and nationally, having been invited to interview President Obama.

Jonathan hoped to get the chance to appear with Ann Kirkpatrick. She refused. As John Hook explains in the opening, Kirkpatrick refused to even be interviewed separately. She wouldn't do an interview via Skype or Phone. She's also turned down requests from other television stations, as many of you know.

You can see the opening of the show where Hook talks about his invitation here:

To watch the entire interview here: www.myfoxphoenix.com/story/19875838/newsmaker-sund...paton

Here is what Jonathan Paton had to say about Kirkpatrick's continued refusal to talk to the voters on camera:

"One of the basic roles of a member of Congress is to actually communicate with real live people. I can't imagine why Ann Kirkpatrick refuses to be interviewed on camera, except that she knows her plan to continue supporting Obamacare and trillion dollar deficits isn't what the voters want. No wonder she doesn't want to talk about her plans on camera." -- Jonathan Paton

ICYMI Big news Washington Post moves CD-1 from "Leans Dem" to "Tossup." AZ01

The Washington Post's Chris Cilliizza, who ranks U.S. House races all over the country, just moved the race between Jonathan Paton and Ann Kirkpatrick for Arizona's First District from being "Leans Democratic" to "Tossup".

Given recent polls showing Paton ahead, and major newspaper endorsements from the Arizona Republic, Arizona Daily Star, and Casa Grande Dispatch, Paton is poised to win this race.

Here is what Cillizza had to say:

* AZ-1 moves from"lean Democratic” to"toss-up”

Former congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick (D), who is trying to win a district with a slight GOP lean, just got passed over for the Arizona Republic’s endorsement."We have seen more complete meltdowns in our board meetings, but never one so unexpected,” the paper said of Kirkpatrick. Republican Jonathan Paton has a good shot here.

Ann Kirkpatrick makes the "Bonus Bunch" - 10 Most Corrupt Democrats of 2012. AZ01

NRCC Releases Latest"Corrupt Democrat” Video: "The Bonus Bunch”
The Story of Four Politicians Who Thought They Could Do And Spend Whatever They Wanted

Washington --- Today, the National Republican Congressional Committee released its newest Corrupt Democrats video featuring former Representatives Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-01), Carol Shea Porter (NH-01), Dan Maffei (NY-24) and Charlie Wilson (OH-06) for their over-the-top spending abuse. Even after being booted out of office by voters, these Democrats splurged -- spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on salary increases and bonuses to their staffs.
"Voters have had enough of over the top spending sprees from House Democrats that have increased taxes and driven the economy deeper into debt,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay."When will these corrupt Democrats realize that their days of treating taxpayer dollars like Monopoly money are up?”

Arizona Daily Star endorses Jonathan Paton in AZ01.

Third major newspaper in Arizona’s First Congressional District to lend endorsement.

Jonathan Paton won the endorsement of the Arizona Daily Star this morning, the third major newspaper endorsement Paton has received in the last week.

The Star praised Paton’s history of accessibility and tackling tough problems. The paper also highlighted his work reforming Arizona’s Child Protective Services systems.
"... We admire his record of bringing to light issues others would rather minimize or view as too complex. For example, we share his views that government must be more transparent and accountable. He championed exactly that in the Legislature when the state child-welfare agency failed to protect children from abuse. He stood up for children with no political voice and created purposeful change. Thoughtful leadership always challenges the status quo to produce solutions.”

The Star endorsement follows recent endorsements of Paton by the Arizona Republic and the Casa Grande Dispatch.

Read the entire editorial here:

Arizona Daily Star: Endorsement: Paton is right pick to tackle budget, debt
azstarnet.com/news/opinion/editorial/paton-is-righ....html

The biggest challenge facing the federal government is to get spending and debt under control without eviscerating Social Security, Medicare and other safety nets.

For too long members of Congress have dodged difficult decisions or refused to listen to people with other views.

Based on Republican Jonathan Paton's history in the Arizona Legislature, we believe he will be accessible to all constituents - and won't shut the door the first time they disagree.

We also trust he will be willing to make hard, unpopular decisions that the budget crisis demands.

We don't favor change for its own sake, but in a race like District 1 where both major-party candidates are well-versed on the issues, sending a newcomer to Washington, D.C., is justified.

For those reasons, Paton is our choice to represent the district.

It's this last point about change that swings our endorsement to Paton instead of his Democratic opponent, Ann Kirkpatrick.

She served one term, from 2008 to 2010, when Democrats controlled both the House and Senate and yet devised no long-term plans to get spending under control.

That isn't to say we agree with all of Paton's positions, such as his pledge to Grover Norquist for no new taxes. He should re-evaluate that decision because a thoughtful politician doesn't say "no, never" to any possible solution.

However, we admire his record of bringing to light issues others would rather minimize or view as too complex. For example, we share his views that government must be more transparent and accountable. He championed exactly that in the Legislature when the state child-welfare agency failed to protect children from abuse.

He stood up for children with no political voice and created purposeful change. Thoughtful leadership always challenges the status quo to produce solutions.

Jonathan Paton is the best choice to represent the district and to help set federal spending priorities that reduce the debt and still protect the most vulnerable.

District 1 is huge, stretching from Oro Valley, north through Flagstaff to the Utah border and east to New Mexico. It includes the Navajo and Hopi reservations.

Jonathan Paton releases new ad"Words” AZ01

Kirkpatrick said she wouldn’t second-guess the president, and her record reflects it

Jonathan Paton released a new ad today that holds Ann Kirkpatrick accountable for supporting ObamaCare, while showering her staff and campaign aides with more than $100,000 in taxpayer-funded bonuses.
"Ann Kirkpatrick voted for ObamaCare and rubber-stamped the failed policies coming out of Washington that have hurt our economy, stifled job creation and added to our debt,” said Jonathan Paton."It’s important that our next representative serves as a check-and-balance on the executive branch, no matter if the president is Republican or Democrat.”

It was also revealed by the Arizona Republic that after being voted out of office in 2010, Kirkpatrick spent more than $100,000 on bonuses to her staff in her final 48 hours in office. She even brought campaign aides onto her official staff and used taxpayer dollars to reward them.

You can view the ad here:

Script as follows:

I’m Jonathan Paton and I approve this message.
Ann Kirkpatrick... "...I completely support what the President did with the Affordable Care Act"
We know...
Kirkpatrick voted for ObamaCare...
...cutting Medicare by $716 billion
...empowering 15 unelected bureaucrats to deny seniors care
While Kirkpatrick showered her staff and campaign aides with"more than $100,000” in taxpayer-funded bonuses.
Ann Kirkpatrick:
"I’m not going to second-guess the president..."
Yeah, we know.

NRCC - Ann_Kirkpatrick's wasteful ways. AZ01

The NRCC is up with a new ad in Arizona revealing to voters Ann Kirkpatrick’s wasteful record.

NRCC COMMENT:"Ann Kirkpatrick was unelected after she supported ObamaCare and $13 billion worth of earmarks. But that didn’t stop her from doling out $100,000 in taxpayer money to her staff.” – NRCC Spokesman Daniel Scarpinato

Script:

ANNOUNCER: The last time Ann Kirkpatrick was in Congress, she went on quite a spending spree.

Kirkpatrick voted for more than 9,000 earmarks at a cost of nearly $13 billion.

She voted for ObamaCare with a price tag of $1 trillion.

And when she lost, she doled out $100,000 in tax payer money to her staff.

Even Tucson Weekly calls Ann Kirkpatrick Ad attacking Jonathan Paton, "Simply False." AZ01

The Tucson Weekly – which has covered Rio Nuevo from start to finish – is calling Ann Kirkpatrick’s latest attack ad"phony” and its attacks"simply false.”
"Accusing (Paton) of being part of the group that wasted hundreds of millions of dollars is simply false,” the publication reports.

As the Weekly points out, Paton passed reforms to the board and was then appointed to help clean up the mess left by the city of Tucson and the original Rio Nuevo Board. Paton called for audits to determine where the $200 million was wasted.

Here is a comment from Jonathan on this false attack:
"Ann Kirkpatrick’s support in this district is plummeting as voters learn that she wasted more than $100,000 of taxpayer money on bonuses for her staff and campaign aides after being voted out of office in 2010. Now, she has no choice but to just make things up. This ad is a complete lie and speaks volumes about not only Kirkpatrick’s lack of character but also her understanding of the issues in the southern part of this district. I call on her to immediately take down what the Weekly describes as pure 'BS.'"

From the Tucson Weekly:

Tucson Weekly: CD 1 Air War: Kirkpatrick Levels BS Claim Against Paton on Rio Nuevo
"Paton called for audits of that spending while serving in the Arizona Legislature and pushed to see a new board formed that stripped control from the city of Tucson. By the time Paton joined the new Rio Nuevo Board following his resignation from the state Senate to pursue an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 2010, the Rio Nuevo Board members had stopped spending money on almost anything besides audits and attorneys.... You can be critical of the reformed Rio Nuevo board that Paton joined for filing lawsuits instead of pushing forward with repairs to the Tucson Convention Center, but accusing him of being part of the group that wasted hundreds of millions of dollars is simply false.” www.tucsonweekly.com/TheRange/archives/2012/10/05/...nuevo
