Election Records Don’t Back Up Richard Carmona’s Claim that He Voted in 2010. AZSEN

Pima County Recorder says it didn’t happen as Carmona recalls.

PHOENIX – The 2010 election was an important election with much at stake for the state and nation. Democrat Richard Carmona claims he voted, but election officials in Pima County say he didn’t. Indeed, records prove that he sat out both the primary and general elections.
"If you’re asking people for your vote in this election, then I think people should expect that you take your franchise as a voter seriously,” said Jeff Flake.

And records further show that Carmona has a pattern of skipping primary elections. Carmona’s response has been to say:"I think it’s very disingenuous when I’m an independent to cite me for not voting in primaries. I mean it just doesn’t happen.”
"’It just doesn’t happen?’ Apparently Dr. Carmona, who registered himself as a Democrat a year ago, remains unaware that independents have been allowed to vote in primaries since the law was changed back in 1998,” said Andrew Wilder, communications director for Flake for Senate."It strikes me that someone seeking to serve in the United States Senate should be better informed.”

Jeff Flake Facts Don’t Support Richard Carmona’s Claim That Tensions Were Result of Reform. AZSEN

Carmona’s abuse of travel and staff was at heart of disagreements

PHOENIX – In response to testimony from Dr. Cristina Beato, former Acting Assistant Secretary of Health at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Richard Carmona has lashed out and tried to discredit her.

Carmona claims:"I refused to politicize science, and that’s what the issue really is here” (KPNX, 10/11/12). But that’s not what the issue is.

On May 22, 2012 the Associated Press reported that"Emails that The Associated Pressobtained through the Freedom of Information Act reinforce that there were tensions within HHS about where Carmona should go and what groups he should address. One email noted thatCarmona made 19 trips in the first six months after taking office, 12 of them with stops inArizona, San Diego or both. ‘I think we have a real problem here,’ HHS employee Hal Thompson wrote.” Carmona owns homes in Arizona and San Diego.

Dr. Beato reiterated her testimony to Politico:"In the interview with POLITICO, Beato stood by her 2007 testimony. Beato said one of the issues that led to a midnight visit by Carmona involved his wish to visit the University of California, San Francisco, his alma mater, to receive an honorary degree. Beato alleged that Carmona wanted to pay for the trip using government funds, which she refused to allow.

Dr. Cristina Beato"Richard Carmona Should Never, Ever Be in the U.S. Senate” AZSEN

New ad addresses Carmona’s temperament issues

PHOENIX – Jeff Flake for Senate unveiled a new ad today that features Richard Carmona’s former supervisor while he was the U.S. Surgeon General.

The ad features the personal testimony of Dr. Cristina Beato, who served as Acting Assistant Secretary of Health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 2003 to 2005. Dr. Beato recounts the night that Dr. Carmona angrily slammed on her door in the middle of the night in a rage to continue an argument that he started earlier that day. The incident, which was investigated by the House Oversight Committee, was reported on in May by Politico and more recently by the Arizona Republic.

Public Record Doesn’t Support Carmona Claims on Pima County Health Care System Resignation. AZSEN

Scathing Arizona Daily Star editorial called for Carmona’s firing

PHOENIX – In an effort to explain his dismal record as head of the Pima County Health Care System, Richard Carmona has offered nothing but excuses. Unfortunately for him, these excuses have no basis in reality.

Rather than pushing for change, it was Carmona’s reluctance to institute any meaningful reforms or cut spending that led to the hospital system’s financial woes and Carmona’s eventual forced resignation.

On July 9, 1999, the Arizona Daily Star Editorial Board said"County leaders and Pima County Health Care System head Richard Carmona must move immediately to slash jobs and programs if they want to save the hospital from far worse jeopardy in the near future.” They referred to Carmona’s"muddled explanations” and lack of aggressive reforms as"managerial weakness” (“Kino Needs Cuts - Now,” Arizona Daily Star, 7/9/99). Another Star editorial was more blunt:"The bottom line: Carmona’s record as a fiscal manager demands his ouster” (“Dismiss Carmona,” Arizona Daily Star, 7/13/99). If Richard Carmona refused to cut spending to save Kino Community Hospital, why should voters believe he would make the tough decisions to cut spending andbalance the budget in the U.S. Senate?

When the Arizona Daily Star called for Carmona’s firing in an editorial on July 13, 1999 entitled"Dismiss Carmona,” they said,"...the Carmona years have been disastrous years characterized by drift and squabbling that the CEO never transcended” (“Dismiss Carmona,” Arizona Daily Star, 7/13/99). If Richard Carmona can’t transcend politics at the county level, why should voters believe him when he says he’ll transcend politics in the U.S. Senate?

The Arizona Daily Star called Carmona"uncooperative, even truculent” (“Dismiss Carmona,” Arizona Daily Star, 7/13/99). If Richard Carmona couldn’t work with others to solve problems and manage the Pima County Health Care System, why should voters trust him when he says he’ll sit down and work with others solve the major issues facing the country?

FACT Carmona's First Vote Will Be For Harry Reid. AZSEN

Yesterday, Richard Carmona – who is the only candidate that was personally recruited by both President Barack Obama and Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid – refused to tell Politico if he’ll vote for Harry Reid to be the Majority Leader.

Carmona is one of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee's favorite candidates and was personally courted by President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to get into the race. (David Catanese, Bivens clears the way for Carmona, Politico, 3/27/2012)

As a reminder, the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) and the Harry Reid connected – Majority PAC – have spent over $900,000 in Arizona for Richard Carmona.

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Has Spent $512,547 In Arizona For Richard Carmona. (Arizona Senate, Outside Spending, www.opensecrets.org, Accessed 10/8/12)

Harry Reid Connected Super PAC – Majority PAC – Has Spent $405,036 In Arizona For Richard Carmona. (Arizona Senate, Outside Spending, www.opensecrets.org, Accessed 10/8/12)

Harry Reid’s Searchlight PAC Has Given Democrat Richard Carmona $10,000. (Center For Responsive Politics, www.opensecrets.org, Accessed 5/30/12)

Yet, Carmona has the audacity to claim that he hasn’t decided if he will vote to keep Harry Reid as the Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate. Additionally, it’s worth remembering that Carmona claimed that he had no connection to President Obama, yet it was widely reported that the President personally recruited him to run.
"Not only was Richard Carmona personally recruited by both President Barack Obama and Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid to run for the U.S. Senate, National Democrats have sent nearly $1 million to aid Carmona’s campaign. Of course Richard Carmona’s first vote will be for Harry Reid – so they can implement President Obama’s liberal agenda – and given that he can’t be honest about this simple fact, serves as a reminder that Carmona can’t be trusted.” Jahan Wilcox, NRSC Spokesman

Richard Carmona Ran Debt Up To $46 Million At The Pima County Health System. AZSEN

After Driving The Pima County Health System Deeper Into Debt Carmona Was Forced To Resign

PHOENIX – As Arizonans continue to learn why the only Democrat that was personally recruited to run for elected office by President Barack Obama was Richard Carmona, today it’s been revealed that like his recruiter – who has added over $6 trillion to the national debt – Mr. Carmona, while he was the head of the Pima County Health System, ran its debt up to $46 million.

Even though he was only there for a year, under Carmona’s watch the Pima County Health System saw their debt increase by 28 percent and he was forced to resign.

As the Associated Press reports:

"The Pima County Healthcare system’s debt has jumped 28 percent in the last year and is expected to top $46 million by the end of the fiscal year in June. ... [Richard Carmona] the embattled head of the Pima Healthcare system offered his resignation on the eve of a board of supervisors meeting at which he might have been fired.” (“Pima County’s Health Care Debt Growing,” The Associated Press, 4/28/99)

"Just like his recruiter President Barack Obama, Richard Carmona knows how to drive an organization like the Pima County Health System deeper into debt,” said Arizona Republican Party spokesman Tim Sifert. "Given Carmona’s big spending ways, it’s clear that if he gets back to Washington he’ll just be a reliable vote for President Obama’s agenda of more spending and higher taxes.

Richard Carmona Gets Caught Running From President Obama's Healthcare Law. AZSEN

The Fact Is Richard Carmona Is A Strong Proponent Of Government-Run Healthcare

PHOENIX – Over two years ago, Richard Carmona made it very clear that he supported Obamacare, which may be why he’s the only Democrat in the entire country who was personally recruited by President Obama to run for the U.S. Senate. Now with the President’s approval rating at 43 percent in Arizona, Carmona is trying to run away from Mr. Obama and his job-killing healthcare law.

Yesterday, Richard Carmona said he wouldn’t support anyone else’s healthcare plan. Yet it wasn’t too long ago that Carmona called President Obama"brave” for ramming his $1.76 trillion healthcare law through Congress.

Notably, a new ad is out reminding Arizonans that while Richard Carmona will be a reliable vote for President Obama’s liberal agenda, Jeff Flake will always fight for Arizona.

"You can tell the election is getting close, because even Barack Obama’s handpicked candidate, Richard Carmona is trying to run from his support from the President’s job-killing healthcare law,” said Arizona Republican Party spokesman Tim Sifert. "Not only does Carmona support ObamaCare, he’s called President Obama brave for ramming his healthcare law through Congress, and it’s why we need Jeff Flake a proven reformer who will repeal this law and get our country working again.”

BACKGROUND...

RICHARD CARMONA: I'm not here to defend anyone else's plan. (Richard Carmona, Military Officers Association of America Event In Tucson, 9/26/12)

BUT IT WON’T HIDE THE FACT THAT HE STRONGLY SUPPORTS PRESIDENT OBAMA’S HEALTHCARE LAW

RICHARD CARMONA: "Carmona served as the 17th surgeon general of the United States under President George W. Bush. Last year, he participated in series of health care town halls that the congresswoman held in Tucson, Sierra Vista and Green Valley. ‘The issue facing our country is how do we get the best care for the most people at the least cost,’ Carmona said. ‘We spend more for health care than any other nation on Earth, but the metrics of our results don’t reflect that. We need to move toward a health care system, not the sick care system that we have today. This legislation moves us closer to that. This bill is not perfect. But these are complex issues and we must move forward. And then I hope we can sit down with level heads and make it even better for the benefit of the American people.’” (“U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Announces Support For Historic Health Insurance Reform Legislation,” Congresswoman Giffords Press Release, 3/20/10)

RICHARD CARMONA: Yes I support [President Obama’s healthcare law]. However I spoke to the President, to the senior leadership Harry Reid, Schumer, Murray on all these issues. I think what the President did was brave. ... Clearly it’s where I am.” (Richard Carmona, Arizona Democrat Meeting, 10/21/12)

Richard Carmona’s Economic Plan Higher Taxes On Small Business Owners In Arizona.

WASHINGTON — While U.S. Congressman Jeff Flake has unveiled his six point plan for economic growth and prosperity, earlier this week Democrat Richard Carmona revealed that his economic plan was to double-down on President Obama’s failed economic policies of higher taxes and more government spending. (www.jeffflake.com/2012/09/jeff-flake-releases-plan...erity)

Carmona told The Hill that he will oppose a full extension of the 2001 and 2003 Congressional tax cuts. According to reports, this will cost small business owners in Arizona with $3.5 billion in lost economic output and could kill 13,000 jobs in the Grand Canyon State.

As The Hill reports:
"I would be willing to enter into discussion to say, people making over $250 or $300 or $500 [thousand] could pay, and you know, I’m a high wage-earner, and if I had to do that to help out for the next year, OK, I’ll do that.” (Alex Jaffe, Senate Candidate Carmona Has Dems Seeing Blue In Red-State Arizona, The Hill, 9/24/12) (thehill.com/homenews/campaign/251389-carmona-has-d...ariz-)

Notably, Carmona is also a strong supporter of President Obama’s $1.76 trillion, job-killing healthcare law.
"Richard Carmona’s economic plan is quite simple: he stands united with his fellow liberal Democrats in raising taxes on small business owners in Arizona, which could kill 13,000 jobs in the Grand Canyon State,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox. "It’s no surprise President Obama recruited Richard Carmona to run for Senate, because he will clearly be a reliable vote for the President’s tax-and-spend agenda. Arizonans need Jeff Flake who has a plan that will actually reduce the debt and get our country working again.”

Obama-Recruit Richard Carmona Still Supporting Obama's Healthcare Law

Jeff Flake Voted To Repeal President's Flawed Healthcare Law, Pledges to Strengthen Medicare

PHOENIX – Just three weeks before early voting starts, Democrat Richard Carmona, President Obama's hand-picked Senate candidate in Arizona, still can't manage to hide the fact that he's been a longtime supporter of ObamaCare.

The Jeff Flake for U.S. Senate campaign released a new television ad today showing voters the contrast between Jeff Flake's support of realistic reforms, and the claims made by Democrat Richard Carmona, who was recruited by President Obama and supports Obama's healthcare law.

"Jeff Flake is providing a clear choice for Arizona and is a leader with a proven record of supporting realistic reforms, unlike Democrat Richard Carmona who simply rubberstamps President Obama's liberal agenda," said Arizona Republican Party spokesman Tim Sifert. "Time is running out, and based on his support of the Democrat liberal agenda, Arizona's voters are quickly learning just how liberal Richard Carmona really is."

In September 2009, Carmona Said Health Care Reform Was Essential To Contain Escalating Costs."Before the members of the public spoke, former U.S. Surgeon General and Tucson resident Dr. Richard Carmona told the crowd that health-care reform is essential to contain escalating costs and to change a system that focuses on ‘sick care’ rather than health. He added that he’s been disappointed at how many of the forums on national reform have devolved into shouting matches.”(Stephanie Innes,"Crowd Attentive, At Times Rowdy,” Arizona Daily Star, 9/1/09)

In March 2010, Carmona Announced Support For ObamaCare, Stating"We Need To Move Toward A Health Care System, Not The Sick Care System That We Have Today. This Legislation Moves Us Closer To That. This Bill Is Not Perfect. But These Are Complex Issues And We Must Move Forward.”"Carmona served as the 17th surgeon general of the United States under President George W. Bush. Now Has "Skittishness" About Being Recruited by Obama for AZSEN

@CarmonaforAZ TV Reporter Says Carmona "Hedging" About Appearing With Head of Democrat Party

PHOENIX – After interviewing Democrat Richard Carmona, who was recruited by President Obama to run for the U.S. Senate in Arizona, Channel 12 News Political Reporter Brahm Resnik last night said Carmona was "hedging" about appearing with the head of his party.

Reporter: "Carmona goes as far as hedging, as whether he'd appear with the head of his party, President Obama."

Carmona: "I have no idea. I mean, it would be, I'd have to decide on, where am I, what do I have to give up to be there, if I'm gonna be in front of another group that I need."

Reporter: "Carmona's skittishness about the president might have something to do with Mr. Obama's unpopularity in Arizona. The new survey shows him down nine points to Republican nominee Mitt Romney," (Brahm Resnik, 12 News, 9/11/12)

"Democrat Richard Carmona is now trying to hide his loyalty to President Obama from voters who deserve to know where he stands,” said Arizona Republican Party Spokesman Tim Sifert. "Richard Carmona is part of the President's plan to keep the U.S. Senate in the hands of liberal Democrats who support ObamaCare, but voters know Jeff Flake will support their desire to repeal it.”
